Road Trip: Park City 2010

When my parents 1st invited us along to Park City, I had no hesitation with my response, “No thanks.” I knew better. With littles…7, 4, and 2, I could not think of anything besides Chinese water torture that could be more difficult to endure. My boys last about one hour in the car before they have reached their limit, so the image of 3 “done” boys on a long distance car ride is what spurred my immediate answer. I was so certain of my “no thanks” that I didn’t even mention the invitation to my hubs.

However, we were spending time with my parents a few weeks later and my dad mentioned the trip. Kevin’s response was much different than mine, “Oh, that sounds GREAT!”

Not wanting to be Debbie the Downer, I decided we’d go along. And I’m glad we did. I was right about the car ride. I threatened to get out and walk more than once to escape the complaining, fighting and screaming. But once we were there, it was all worth it.

Here are a few tips for surviving a long road trip:

Enjoy the scenery and block out the “How much longer until we are there?”…

Snacks (especially food that they don’t usually get to eat)…

DVDs (Yes, I’m THAT kind of mom)…

Lots of stops for getting out the wiggles and lots praying, crossing fingers, and rain dances that they sleep. For a very long time. My kids didn't.

And when I realized my kids were not going to sleep long and that the walking on my own to Utah was not a great plan, I relied on this…

So did we make it? Did we survive? Yes, we did. And to celebrate, I'm doing my 1st give away. Since Starbucks made me so happy on this crazy drive, I'm giving away a Starbucks gift card. Just leave a comment in the comment box and enter to win. I'll announce the winner on Friday.

Plus, more to come on Park City later this week.

So. . . how many rounds of "The Wheels on the Bus" or "99 Bottles of Coke on the wall" did you endure? Songs tend to sooth our savage beast on long car rides. Ours mixes it up by busting out Katie Perry's "Hot N Cold" or Madonna's "Material Girl". Hearing a 5 1/2 year old bust out Material Girl is HILARIOUS! I hope you had some fun moments in the car amongst the insanity.

Welcome back to reality.

Our longest trip was only 5 hours. We subsisted on endless games of Eye Spy. I usually have them play it at restaurants to pass the time and keep them occupied but it worked in the car, too. Did the dog come along for the trip?

Katie, so glad you decided to go, but can understand why you were hesitant! I've never been to Park City, but I've heard good things. On a road trip that long, Starbucks would have been my constant friend as well!

I love your blog title! I don't blame you for having dvds. You kind of need them for time to time especially on a roadtrip! We do that with my cousins - they are happy we're happy the whole minivan is peaceful and quiet :) Pretty scenery btw!

Andrea,
We kept the dog at home with my brother in law, but next time, I think I'll take the dog and leave a kid with him. : )

Been waiting to read this addition to your BLOG site. I remember one trip to Phoenix by plane with the boys, no Stephen, and his mom picked us up at the airport. We drove the hour and half to Tucson with the boys screaming at each other the whole way. What was I thinking to do it alone. Totally embarrassed by their behavior I swore I would never do that again. Wish we had car DVD players back then. p.s. next time....... sedation.
